Top 20 The best movies 2013 Part 2

20. Killer Joe
Director: William Friedkin
Actors: Matthew McConaughey, Emile Hirsch, Gina Gershon, Juno Temple, Thomas Haden Church

The power of a thunderous movie ending should never be underestimated. Even if everything that precedes a film’s closing scenes underwhelms, the last shot can send audiences out on a high that’ll make them forgive all of the inadequacies. Acclaimed director William Friedkin’s (The French Connection, The Exorcist) extremely pulpy and grimy, though unfairly NC-17-rated, Killer Joe has one of the craziest, entertainingly off-the-rails endings in recent years, but what makes it such a complete success is that the film as a whole is a victory.

In Pulitzer Prize-winning screenwriter Tracy Letts’ adaptation of his own 1993 play, Matthew McConaughey serves a smoldering, combustible turn as a seedy Dallas cop, nicknamed Killer Joe, whose side hustle involves killing folks for cash. His target of the moment is the good-for-nothing mother of a young, in-debt deadbeat (Emile Hirsch) from a dysfunctional trailer park family. Unable to pay Joe, Hirsch begrudgingly gives his cute space cadet of a little sister (Juno Temple) up as a “retainer.”

19. Ruby Sparks

Directors: Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris
Actors: Paul Dano, Zoe Kazan, Annette Bening, Chris Messina, Antonio Banderas, Steve Coogan, Elliot Gould

Take our advice: Rent a copy of Ruby Sparks, schedule a home video night with your preferred lady friend, and be prepared to receive cool points a-plenty from your fairer-sexed partner. Perhaps even some post-movie loving as a reward for displaying such quality taste in cinema. But we digress.

Whats truly special about the second feature film from sharp husband-and-wife directing team Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris (Little Miss Sunshine) is the wonderful script from star Zoe Kazan. Blending magical-realism with touching romance, Kazans screenplay brilliantly develops a romance from the seemingly impossible.

The actress real-life boyfriend, the perennially underrated Paul Dano, gives a strong leading man performance as a struggling novelist who inexplicably wills a fictional dream girl (Kazan) into existence and falls in love with her. Ruby Sparks works on several levels concurrently: Its a genuinely sweet comedy, a heart-tugging love story, and a Twilight Zone-esque look at human connection in a heightened reality. Most critics would call Silver Linings Playbook the years best romantic comedy—around these parts, the title goes to Ruby Sparks.

18. Beasts of the Southern Wild

Director: Benh Zeitlin
Actors: Quvenzhane Wallis, Dwight Henry, Levy Esterly, Gina Montana, Lowell Landes

It’s rare that a movie given such a high amount of critical hyperbole and instant prestige lives up to the hype. After winning both the top grand jury prize at the Sundance Film Festival in January and the Camera d’Or (designated for best first-time director) at the Cannes Film Festival in May, debut feature helmer Benh Zeitlin’s Beasts of the Southern Wild rode one of the loudest, most enthusiastic waves of pre-release build-up seen in quite some time before its late June release.

Thankfully, all of the positive word was absolutely justified. Anchored by an astounding performance from 6-year-old rookie Quvenzhane Wallis, Beasts is an emotional powerhouse. The film follows a tough little girl, Hushpuppy, who, living in a fictional New Orleans marshland community called “The Bathtub,” must contend with both a dying father (the equally dynamite Dwight Henry), mythical monsters known as “aurochs,” and rising waters that are washing her homeland away.

Shot in the heart of New Orleans with newbie actors and a tight-knit production crew, Zeitlin’s picture is as authentic as it is captivating. When Hushpuppy’s defiant narration isn’t either making you laugh or stand at attention, the film’s rich characters and brave narrative turns will leave you clutching for fresh Kleenex. It’s a towering achievement from a director and young rugrat/actress whose names we’ll be hearing a lot of come awards season.

17. The Spectacular Now

Director: James Ponsoldt
Actors: Miles Teller, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Shailene Woodley, Kyle Chandler, Jennifer Jason Leigh

Shailene Woodley gives a performance of such fragility and power in The Spectacular Now that the rest of the movie almost feels dull by comparison. Director James Ponsoldt (Smashed) adapted Tim Tharp’s coming-of-age novel with heartfelt sincerity, and the result has wooed enthusiastic Sundance crowds. Miles Teller stars as Sutter, a high school senior with a great enthusiasm for human connection and partying, but little enthusiasm for classwork or future planning. Think Ferris Bueller with a concealed depression and an alcohol abuse problem. Woodley dominates every frame she’s in with sweet hesitations and a nervous smile. She provides a mesmerizing portrayal of young love. If only The Spectacular Now had been about its strongest character, it could have really been something.—Jeremy Mathews

16. Crystal Fairy

Director: Sebastián Silva
Actors: Michael Cera, Gaby Hoffman, Juan Andrés Silva, José Miguel Silva, Augustin Silva

If Michael Cera was typecast as the poster boy for Type B romantic heroes—awkward but sweet, soft but humble, geeky but loveable—his turn in Sebastián Silva’s Crystal Fairy marks his arrival as an unlikeable Type A anti-hero. In one of the actor’s two Chile-based collaborations with Silva at Sundance (the other is Magic Magic), Jaime (Cera) is an ugly American, obsessed with mind-altering drugs and oblivious to his own self-centeredness. Stoned at a local party, he invites fellow American Crystal Fairy (Gaby Hoffman)—a hippie, hairy, sometimes off-putting and often-naked free spirit—on his quest for a rare mescaline-producing cactus on a camping trip with friends. The sparse plot nonetheless provides opportunities for a little self-reflection and some original, dark humor, making the druggy affair a worthwhile trip to the theater.—Josh Jackson

15. The Crash Reel

Director: Lucy Walker

Even for those of us who have no interest in snowboarding or winter sports, The Crash Reel provides a remarkable story about family. What could have easily been a by-the-numbers recovery story about a niche sport is constantly compelling in the hands of one of our most talented young documentarians—Oscar-nominee Lucy Walker. It’s striking how different each of Walker’s movies are in both subject matter and feel, yet she’s remarkably consistent. She finds the right story and the right tone every single time.—Michael Dunaway

14. Afternoon Delight

Director: Jill Soloway
Actors: Kathryn Hahn, Juno Temple, Josh Radnor, Jane Lynch

We often see films about male midlife crises, so it’s refreshing to experience one from a woman’s point of view. From the beginning of the movie, McKenna (Kathryn Hahn) feels like a fish out of water among her friends, and she’s losing touch with her husband (Josh Radnor). Director Jill Soloway does a really good job of building that frustration so when McKenna has a spark of chemistry with a young dancer at a strip club (Juno Temple), it’s more believable that she’d let her into her life. Her character is obviously well-intention, but her self-destruction isn’t sugar-coated. And we get to see a new side of Josh Radnor than we’ve seen before—darker, more troubled and internal.—Michael Dunaway

13. The Gatekeepers

Director: Dror Moreh

Dror Moreh’s documentary has already played at Telluride and Toronto, and is even already nominated for an Oscar, but it plays Sundance this year in the Spotlight section, reserved for a select few films that have played other festivals. It earns its spot, and then some. Amazingly, Moreh conducted interviews with every single head of Mossad, the Israeli intelligence agency. The access boggles the mind, and some of the stories are riveting. If there’s a flaw in the film, it’s one of bias—the film dwells on Israeli atrocities while mitigating its criticisms of Palestinian terrorism. Still, it’s a fascinating look behind the curtain. And it’s a technical tour de force—Moreh does things with still photos that I’ve never seen done in a film before.—Michael Dunaway

12. Toy’s House

Director: Jordan Vogt-Roberts
Actors: Nick Robinson, Nick Offerman, Moises Arias, Gabriel Basso, Alison Brie, Megan Mullally, Erin Moriarty

Comedies generally fare well at Sundance. After hours of watching dark, disturbing dramas and depressing documentaries, sometimes you just need a laugh. Toy’s House provides plenty. Like Superbad (but with less raunch and even more heart), it tells the story of three boys on the brink of becoming men—struggling to fit in at school and at home. Joe Toy (Nick Robinson) has had enough of his overbearing, miserable widower father (Nick Offerman) and decides to build a house in the woods for he and his friend Patrick (Gabriel Basso). Moises Arias steals scene after scene as the awkward third roommate who just kind of shows up.—Josh Jackson

11. Fill the Void

Director: Rama Burshtein
Actors: Hila Feldman, Razia Israeli, Yiftach Klein, Renana Raz, Ido Samuel

The press materials describe the film as a Jane Austin novel set in Tel Aviv’s ultra-Orthodox Hasidic community, and that’s about as close to the mark as we can get. It’s more than just a peek behind the veil of a seldom-depicted society, though. The tender film is anchored by a sensitive bravura lead performance by Hila Feldman. Somehow her struggles with family and marriage, while maintaining a parcularly Orthodox spin, still seem completely universal, as well.—Michael Dunaway

10. Don Jon’s Addiction

Director: Joseph Gordon-Levitt
Actors: Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Scarlett Johansson, Julianne Moore, Tony Danza, Rob Brown

Joseph Gordon-Levitt has come a very long way since Third Rock From the Sun (and a rich career as a child actor that preceded even that). He’s shown an amazing range in films like Hesher, Mysterious Skin and his recent run of blockbusters. And he stretches himself further in his first directorial effort, Jon Don’s Addiction, playing a New Jersey Don Juan whose routine involves his car, his gym, his club, his church, his women and his porn. It’s an interesting—and hilarious—look at both how men objectify women and how women objectify men. His seemingly irredeemable character finds redemption in surprising ways.—Josh Jackson

Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10 1 Review

AT&T today announced that it will be offering the LTE Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 tablet on November 9 with the $499 price tag. Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 looks and behaves very similarly to the Galaxy Note 10.1, but Tab 2 10.1 drops the price and the spec to deliver a more affordable Android tablet. Just let’s have more details about it.
Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1

Design

It is both slightly heavier and a bit less svelte than its predecessor, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1. You can find a power/sleep button, a volume rocker, a 32GB capacity microSD slot, an IR blaster, and a headphone jack on the top edge of tablet from the left. Besides, two 2-inch-long speakers stretch vertically along the left and right bezel. Along the bottom edge sits a dock connector and microphone pinhole. The Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 houses a 2-megapixel front camera for VGA and a 3-megapixel rear camera. No HDMI option.

The 1280x800 pin-sharp pixels display on tablet, doing its best to make your movies, pictures and web pages look clear and bright. The screen in 10.1 inch is wonderful with nice sensibility, quick response and accurate brushing and pressing.

Features

  • Fast 1G dual core processor provides a smooth user experience whether youre playing games or browsing the web. Also, the microSD card slot allows you to add up to 32GB of additional data storage or easily transfer music and picture files.
  • Smart Remote app in Tab 2 10.1 lets you get instant access to thousands of movies and TV shows via the pre-loaded Samsung Media Hub, enjoy live updates from all your social sites and access thousands of apps on Google Play.
  • You can customize your apps with Samsungs exclusive TouchWiz, which gives you the live content you want, including e mail, websites and your social networks.
  • The built-in IR Blaster turns your tablet into a universal remote helping you easily find your favorite shows.
  • Running on Android 4.0 ICS which makes common actions more visible and lets users navigate with simple, intuitive gestures. You can enjoy the features of ICS including Multitasking, the recent app button, Home screen folders, favorites tray, and resizable widgets, etc. It is less advanced than the Android 4.2, but thats hardly a disaster.
  • Samsung apps like Music Hub, Media Hub, and Game Hub, a built-in screenshot app, and the Mini Apps tray located on the bottom of the screen are offered consisting of a calculator, notes, calendar, music player, and clock.
  • A free one-year subscription to Dropbox* to store up to 50 GB of your favorite digital content--including photos, videos, and documents--and share files with coworkers, friends, and family members.
  • The large 7,000mAh battery does a pretty good job of maintaining the Tabs many duties, and you should get more than a single day of heavy use on a single charge.
Final thoughts
Galaxy Tab 2 offers some serious improvement to its predecessor as a good value Android tablet with Ice Cream Sandwich and a fine screen and some special features like Smart Remote. It is a dual-core $400 tablet with 16GB of built-in storage, however, which is higher than quad-core Asus Transformer Pad TF300 with 32GB of storage. Of course, its TouchWiz and IR Blaster can add points to it and if you are fan to Samsung, you may consider it.

How to Manually Upgrade via ODIN Sprint Samsung Galaxy Tab to 2 3 4 Gigerbread Update

Some of Sprints Samsung Galaxy Tab users experiencing an update error like attempting the "Update Firmware" but the Tab stays busy for a minute and then eventually stops with the following error message:

"The Firmware update could not be completed.  Please try again later.   If the problem persists, you may need to contact Customer Service".

"Error:  Connection Error"

and or when attempting the "Update Android" it will only shows: "Your system is currently up to date."

Others may also having trouble updating it via WI-FI since many users having a wi-fi only version, and can only updated via 3G while the WI-Fi is turned Off. So, it needs to turn off wifi, and use 3G to get the update.

This is originally posted by ktran1588 over XDA for some reason and a solution to those who are having trouble updating their Sprint Samsung Galaxy Tabs. This is also an option to those who bought a refurbished Sprint Galaxy Tabs that has a WiFi only version.

Warning: You will lose root on the tab, and there is not a solution to root Gingerbread yet...
Does applying it cause you to lose any apps or files on the tab? Make a back-up copy of all important files before proceeding.

First you have to have stock EB28 on the tab prior to the update.

Check the software version on your phone:

1.  From the Home screen, press Menu, then tap Settings
2.  Flick up to scroll down, then tap About Phone
3.  Software version is displayed under Baseband Version
4. Galaxy Tab shows like the following information:

Hardware version SPH-P100.08

Model number SPH-P100

Firmware version 2.2

Baseband Version S:P100.08 S.EB28

Kernel version 2.6.32.9

Build number SPH-P100.DJ30

If tour device firmware is not yet on EB28 follow these guide:

   1. Download the E24 flasher
   2. Find a copy of Odin (1.3 worked for me)
   3. Extract the flasher, look in ModelsBinary, strip the .MD5 extension from the file SPH-P100.EA24.SECURE.REV07-FULL_CL871413.tar.md5
   4. Load Odin
   5. Connect device via USB
   6. Reboot into recovery (power off, hold power and down volume keys or do a "adb reboot download")
   7. Select the newly renamed .TAR file in the PDA slot in Odin
   8. Select start (flashing should commence)
   9. Boot, then you will be prompt for EB28 update, allow the EB28 update to complete

Then follow these step to update to Gingerbread:

   1. Download the Gingerbread update (Special thanks to pvtjoker42 for this. Source)
   2. Copy the update_from_EB28_to_EF17.zip file to the root of your SD card, rename it to update.zip
   3. Reboot into recovery (power off, hold power and up volume keys or do a "adb reboot recovery")
   4. Use volume rocker to select apply update.zip (or whatever)
   5. Touch the home button to select

Sprint samsung galaxy tab 2.3 gingerbread

NOTE: If you got stuck during the update, try to reformat the sd card with your tab or use a different one, then try again.

Kindle Fire 2 and Glowing Kindle Touch Released on September 6

Amazon is expected to announce the second version of its Kindle Fire tablet at a press conference in Santa Monica, California, on 6 September. The Fire may come in both 7in and — less likely — 10in versions, along with an improved Kindle Touch. One tablet will be supported by advertising to reduce the cost, according to an unconfirmed report in the Wall Street Journal.

While predictions are always risky, Amazon sent us the biggest possible hint yesterday (Thursday), with the announcement that the original Kindle Fire had sold out forever. Visit the Amazon.com page for the $199 Kindle Fire, for example, and there are no new ones for sale, only second-hand products. The $99 Kindle Touch is listed as "Currently unavailable".

There is no prospect of Amazon discontinuing these products, so there must be new versions ready to launch.

A few details of the Kindle Fire 2 (or Kindle Blaze, or whatever) have already appeared. The most significant is an increase in screen resolution from 1024 x 600 pixels to 1280 x 800. The larger format is already used by other tablets, including Googles similarly-priced Nexus 7.

Last month, DisplayMate president Raymond Soneira told the AllThingsD website that this represented "a 67 percent increase in total pixels, and it is visually significant. It gives the display a PPI (pixels per inch) of 216." This should improve the readability of text, and will also enable the Kindle Fire 2 to show HD (720p) videos.

For comparison, Apples iPad had a lower resolution of 1024 x 768 pixels, which was doubled to 2048 x 1536 in the iPad 3. Apple also had to thicken the iPad 3 slightly to provide extra battery power to support the extra pixels, though the Kindle Fire 2 is unlikely to need this.
Amazon Kindle Fire

The Kindle Fire 2 is expected to be thinner and use more metal in its construction. It may also include a camera to support Skype, and a GPS chip to support location. According to a Reuters story published yesterday: "Amazon.com Incs new Kindle Fire will have mapping services via a tie-up with Nokia Oyj … filling a gap in the tablets capabilities while snubbing Google Incs popular service."
The new Kindle Touch is expected to have an illuminated display. This looks like a natural response to Barnes & Nobles launch of the Nook Simple Touch with GlowLight.

The difficult question is whether a 10.1in tablet will appear at the same time. Taiwan-based Digitimes and the BGR website wrote about 10in tablets long before the original launch. Last June, BGR got quite specific about the two models, codenamed Coyote and Hollywood, but Hollywood has still not appeared.

It also remains to be seen whether Amazon will reduce the Fires $199 price to compete with the Google Nexus 7 and the entry-level model of whatever 7in iPad Apple might launch. The $199 tag was considered aggressive at the time, and it is thought that both the original Fire and Googles Nexus 7 sell at close to break-even prices. After all, Apple charges $199 for its cheapest iPod Touch.
Both Google and Amazon are prepared to forego hardware profits to increase adoption, and take profits later from the sales of ebooks, movies, music, apps and, in Googles case, advertising.

When announcing that the Fire had sold out, Amazon boss Jeff Bezos trumpeted the success of "the best content ecosystem". The press release said:

Kindle Fire offers customers a vast selection of digital content — over 22 million movies, TV shows, apps, games, books, magazines and more — in one seamless, end-to-end experience, making it easy for customers to browse, discover and purchase. Since Kindle Fire launched last September, all of the top 10 products on Amazon — across all products — are digital products
.
Whether this impressive ecosystem generates more cash per device than Googles hugely-profitable advertising is another matter.

In the end, I suspect the most likely result is that Amazon will launch two 7in Kindles, with the Kindle Fire 2 at $199 and an ad-supported Kindle at a lower price, possibly a penny less than $175.
