Top 10 longest living animals in the world

With the progress of science and medicine, our life expectancy continues to increase, although we are still quite far from the longevity of some animal species .An increasing number of those who manage to reach 100 years old even remotely comparable to that of some creatures in nature. But what are the long-lived animals in the world ? Heres a list of ten species that can live for many years, some potentially forever!

List Top 10 longest living animals in the world

Sebastes Aleutians

The redfish of the species Sebastes aleutianus are generally considered among the most long-lived aquatic creatures. Although this has barely tenth of this ranking. You can find generally between 170 and 670 meters deep, often in the Pacific Ocean. These fish grow very slowly, mature late and can live up to 200 years . The specimen longest-serving of this fish seems to be lived up to 205 years.

Red sea urchin

The red sea urchin ( Strongylocentrotus franciscanus ) has existed for about 450 million years and is the largest of all sea urchins, being able to grow to about 25 cm in diameter. They live without moving for long distances, which is why they are covered with protective spines. However, sometimes congregate and slowly crawl in search of food. Although we often do not exceed 30 years of age, these echinoderms could potentially survive for over 200 years .

Bowhead whale

The Greenland whale ( Balaena mysticetus ), also known as Greenland Right Whale or Arctic Whale, is believed to be the longest-lived mammal on Earth by some scientists. A whale in particular, Bada, is believed to have lived up to 211 years , but it could have easily had 245. Although most whales die between 20 and 60 years of age, were found decidedly older specimens (91, 135, 159 and 172 years).

Carpa Koi

The average age of a Koi carp is below the age of 50, already an excellent result for a fish. But to be part of this list of long-lived animals is necessary to do better. Hanako is a Koi carp died in 1977, at the ripe old age of 226 years , which means that she was born in 1751. This means that already existed before the invention of electricity. Its age was determined by counting the rings present on its scales, in the same way in which it determines the age of a tree.

Lamellibrachia luymesi

The Lamellibrachia luymesi an invertebrate annelid family Siboglinidae , up to 2 meters long, which lives anchored to the seabed of the Gulf of Mexico. This species of marine annelid lives at 2500 meters deep and has a symbiotic relationship with bacteria that oxidize sulfur, one element of which they are able to feed themselves. In some cases these annelids that live in large groups, they can grow up to 10 feet long. From mmento that their growth is very slow, these tube worms can live up to 250 years .

Freshwater pearl mussel

It is believed that about 90% of the populations of margaritifere freshwater mussels ( Margaritifera margaritifera ) is located around Scandinavia. Creatures are generally very durable, able to adapt to new environments easily enough, then climate change, geological, physical, biological, chemical or even those do not affect these animals so much what happens to others. But despite this their number has been declining for several years. Those who survive are the strongest of the group, and probably have seen a great variety of ecosystems. Some of them have over 250 years of age , which makes them perhaps the most ancient creatures in Europe.

Turtles or Tortoises

The Turtles or Tortoises ( Testudinidae ) are famous for their longevity. An average healthy turtle could live up to 150 years, but of course this also depends on the type of turtle in question. The oldest Tortoise note, however, has lived much longer. Adwaita was the pet of British general Robert Clive, before being transferred to the zoo in Kolkata (formerly Calcutta), where he spent the next 130 years of his life. It pretty amazing to think that those who worked in the zoo in the year of his death was not even born at the time of his arrival. The death of this turtle was the result of a crack that had developed in his shell and which has subsequently allowed the dating with carbon. The age of the turtle was then placed over the 250 years (255 and 257 seconds, according to some others).

Clam

The ocean clams  ( Arctica islandica ) are a type of mollusk that is found mainly along the coast of Scotland. Like most other mussels, do not move a lot and dig in the sand or mud, using their gills to ingest food and oxygen. To avoid being eaten, can bury themselves deep in the bottom of the sea and live there for long periods of time without the need to go back for the food or oxygen. In recent decades, ocean vessels have reduced the number of these clams by about 50%, in part, damaging them and leaving them vulnerable to predators in part. Obviously, this implies that more moles less individuals are able to live very long. It is not unusual for these animals survive over 400 years , was found a specimen that had even 500.

Sponge

Few people realize that sponges belong to the animal kingdom, although Spongebob in recent years may have contributed to the spread of this knowledge. Their movements are limited to less than 1 mm per day and grow very slowly, as is the case for other species included in this ranking. Their slow growth rate translates into a particular longevity. There are between 5 and 10 thousand species of sponge, most of whom live between 3 months and 20 years. The Antarctic sponge , however, live much longer: a specimen lived for over 1550 years .

Turritopsis nutricula

This last item should not be a particular surprise, given that it has been much talk a few years ago. And for good reason. The Turritopsis nutricula is nothing special to look at: Newborn babies are about 1 mm long and have 8 tentacles, while adults come to about 4.5 mm and have up to 90 tentacles. Originating in the Caribbean, these small jellyfish can be found almost all over the world. What makes them unique, not only among the jellyfish, but between all living beings, is that they can return to a state of sexual immaturity. These jellyfish are born and grow like any other animal, but when they reach a certain age, they can go back to the polyp stage and start to grow again. It would be as if a person were to go back 50 years to be a child. This means that these jellyfish are potentially immortal .
